Marble Cladding

The restorers' work on the stone cladding primarily focused on the reconstruction of the marble slabs. At present, more than four hundred matching parts have been found, twenty-five slabs have been recomposed, four of them entirely. The selection and classification of the fragments reveal a richness and variety of materials way unexpected in the early assessment.
As happened with the mural paintings, the achievements of the restoration work brought substantial corrections to the original hypotheses of reconstruction formulated by the archaeologists. The quantity and variety of materials suggest that the marble cladding does not come only from an individual room in the area of the excavation, but also from other adjacent or upper parts of the building.
